The Opinionated Bitch – on ‘What Are Women For’?

The Opinionated Bitch – on ‘What Are Women For’? My attention was drawn to an article sweeping across the ether entitled What Are Women For? by James Poulos in The Daily Caller. I ignored it until, while getting ready for work yesterday, I heard him defending the piece on “Up With Chris Hayes” and the conversation drew me into the room. Carefully listening for the basis of his thesis, it dawned on me, there wasn’t one, so I gave in and found his piece on the web that you can read in its entirety here. Let me say it’s...

The Opinionated Bitch – On Hope For the Future

On Hope For the Future Before I say anything else, I’d like to share a video with you that was sent to me by a fan.  Thank you, Marti – it was a gift. I had a few teary-eyed moments after watching this when I couldn’t say anything at all.  You might want to mark that down on your calendars for prosperity. I was left speechless, because I was simultaneously consumed with a feeling of love and acceptance and ultimately, hope for the future.  A lot of my rants have been directed at the Christian Right who feel that...

The Opinionated Bitch – On My Towanda Moment

On My Towanda Moment One of my favorite movies of all-time is “Fried Green Tomatoes”.  It tells the tale of a timid and unhappy Birmingham housewife back in the 80’s befriending an elderly woman in a nursing home who regales stories of her childhood in a tiny Alabama crossroads in the era between WWI and WWII.  Evelyn Couch, the housewife, played by Kathy Bates, becomes enthralled with the masterful storytelling of the elderly Ninny Threadgood, played by the late Jessica Tandy.  She finds strength in the central character of Ninny’s tales, “Idgie Threadgood”, who was to become Ninny’s sister-in-law. ...

The Opinionated Bitch – On The World of Anonymous Bullies

I spend a lot of time talking about the subtext of this election season and equal time attempting to lovingly defend my position.  I say lovingly, because I try not to get down in the mud with the worst of them, but so help me… sometimes, it’s difficult. For more than four years, we’ve dealt with the “Birthers” and the “Truthers” and the “Otherers” (“Otherers” is my personal term for those who paint the Barack Obama as a Secret Kenyan Muslim, i.e., the Tea Party) and it’s exhausting.  No amount of proof or statistics or documents will convince a...

This Week on BROADSIDED – Todd Akin Speaks and the Women RESPOND!

We had another show planned on BROADSIDED this week, but Missouri Congressman and Senate hopeful Todd Akin made some ‘legitimately stupid’ comments about rape that made Ron Paul’s ‘honestly stupid comments about rape earlier this year pale in comparison.  Congressman Darrell Issa held a hearing all about women’s health but failed to include any women while Rush Limbaugh took it upon himself to slut-shame Sandra Fluke and by association, all women who take birth control.  There have been over 1,000 pieces of legislation put forth nation-wide attempting to restrict a women’s access to contraception, health services and reproductive choices...
