It started today. I got my first Christmas card, and inside was cousin Cindy’s 1,500 word essay of her life, as if I care about the intricate details of her cats, kids and cars. Does she REALLY think people want to know about every piece of furniture she bought this year, every trip she’s been on, or what color she painted her dining room?
Is it just me, or do others feel annoyed by these boring Christmas letters?
Does anybody else think these letter writers are a teensy bit self-absorbed?
I hate seeing these letters, and I want to toss them, but I feel like I have to read them in case I later get questioned about the content.
Does anybody else get these insufferable letters? Do you read them, toss them, or what?
I have friends who send a single page with photos of the family, captions, and a SHORT hello with highlights of the year. That’s okay; I actually enjoy them. Then I have a relative who sends a L-O-N-G, single spaced typed letter telling everyone EVERYTHING. No thank you.
I read them, then toss. I have an aunt out West who writes the longest letter to everyone every year. I do not know her that well, but I appreciate the fact that she thought about me.
I think a letter of this type should be 500 words or less.
I can also understand where many people may not mind a letter of this type, especially if they have a recent loss in their family and may wish to reconnect with family or friends who live far away.
