Sue Weaver was raped and murdered by a man who had come to her home for contracted service work — a twice-convicted sex offender, on parole, and his employer should have known about his history. After this horrendous event, Sue’s sister Lucia Bone started C.A.U.S.E. (Consumer Awareness of Unsafe Service Employment), setting standards for employer pre-employment screening of prospective employees. Thursday on BROADSIDED, we are joined by Lucia as well as David Sawyer, President of Safer Places, Inc. a company providing background screenings of potential employees and a C.A.U.S.E-certified vendor.

We also examine Shattered Families with Esther Portillo-Gonzales, Research Fellow with Applied Research Center, and the groundbreaking national research on the perilous intersection of immigration enforcement and the child welfare system. Thousands of families across the U.S. are experiencing seperation, in many cases, permanent separation. U.S.-born children are being ripped from their family members who are being deported.
