World’s Most Dangerous Places to Use WiFi

Warning: If you ever take your laptop while traveling, hotels are hotbeds for scammers and crooks planting malware using insecure hotel (WiFi) Internet connections.

According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), travelers are targeted through pop-up windows while establishing internet connections in their hotel rooms. The traveler is presented “…with a pop-up window notifying the user to update a widely-used software product. If the user clicked to accept and install the update, malicious software was installed on the laptop.”

The FBI recommends that travelers perform software updates on laptops immediately before and after traveling, and if you’re presented with a software update, go directly to the vendor’s website to download.

The IC3 is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).
