Just look at her…
she should be ashamed of herself!
tsk, tsk
absolutely disgusting, isn’t it?
Just look at her…
rolls of fat around her middle
details (but not bulk) camouflaged by baggy tops
never belted or tucked
Just look at her…
so self-conscious, thinking everyone’s staring at her
whispering about her, judging her
(well, aren’t they?)
Just look at her…
hate the indulgent ugliness
hate the hidden shame made manifest
for everyone to see
Just look at her…
look, despise, berate
then, sickened,
step away from the mirror.

I wish I couldn’t relate to this, but I can way too well.
From what I gather, far too many women can. 🙁
This is such a good post, Dawn, we made an exception and featured it on the homepage at http://herewomentalk.com. Congratulations!
Thank you, Kay – I am honoured, and really appreciate your consideration. What a thrill!
Powerful. I find that I am the hardest on myself. I love the image in the mirror…wish I could always see that woman when I look!
That would be nice, wouldn’t it, Jane?! 🙂
Dawn, I read this before looking to see who wrote it…it hits very close to home. Great to see you here on herewomentalk. Your writing is so terrific!
Thank you so much, Sharon – both for your kind words and for introducing me to this site! 🙂
Powerful writing… that brought tears to my eyes.
When we ‘see’ only with our eyes, it is so easy to judge.. so easy to forget that beneath this fragile covering we all have, there is a beautiful soul that just wants a chance to show the amazing person inside that ‘imperfect’ shell we walk around in.
Beautifully written, Dawn.
Thank you so much, Veronica – I appreciate your kind words and insight. 🙂
Dawn, you are an incredibly gifted writer. Thank you for sharing this on Here Women Talk. I love it! And I feel for her, too. Isn’t she like so many of us? I see this was already published on Blogher (otherwise I’d feature it on the home page). Do you have any more work like this that hasn’t been published elsewhere? If so, you might want to enter our creative writing contest (fiction, nonfiction & poetry). We’re accepting submissions until midnight Eastern time on Saturday. http://herewomentalk.com/creative-writing-contest
Thank you for sharing with us. I hope you don’t mind. I added a featured image to your post. Also, I upgraded your status from Contributor to Author so going forward, you’ll be able to add your own featured images and also publish immediately,
Delighted to have you here!
Thank you so very much for your kind words, Kay! I’m really looking forward to getting involved on the site. I wish I had something to submit to the creative writing contest – but everything I’ve written recently has already been posted to one of my blogs, and (in most cases) cross-posted to BlogHer! I’ve only just discovered HWT – wish I’d found it earlier! Thanks again for the warm welcome. 🙂
