Virginia Woolf penned in her essay, A Room of One’s Own, that, “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” As a creativity coach, I have come to understand that my title translates to, ‘a woman who lives with very little money, but houses a large imagination.” I can live with that because in my own little reality I believe Hay House or Random House will be demanding my memoir any day now.

I used to think that we all need a room, a closet converted to an instant office or a favorite chair at Starbucks in order to create our art. Having a place that is reserved only for our creative thoughts and dreams to soar seemed to be vital. But is it always practical? Is it really necessary?

I have a confession to make. I write in my home office and after all these years it seemed to be the place to unleash the words in me. But I did purchase a rocking chair for the sunroom and thought I would take my donated laptop or drawing pad and sit in the sun and write or draw. How grand was my idea – how much Dramamine I needed because of the rocking chair. Back to the office I went.

Now with my artwork, I thought I would need a drawing board, the best lighting possible, the Black Eyed Peas or Maroon 5’s Moves like Jagger blasting from my stereo (still figuring out how to use the iPod) to create. But did Michelangelo dance while bringing David out of the marble? I know he didn’t have a flat screen and back to back episodes of Frasier to distract him. So where do I create my art right now? On my bed. Surrounded by four cats who can be nasty little art critics. It works for me and when I start working in oils again, it might be time to get a bed of my own to make room for my canvases and oils. And to keep my marriage intact.

So never use the excuse that the place is not right to create. What you could lose out on because the chair doesn’t match the rug might be your own magnificent version of Michangelo’s David.

I wonder if I can work with marble in bed?
