Support a Survivor: Be Real

If someone tells you that he/she has been or is being abused in any way, what would you say? You can’t fail when you respond with warmth, sincerity, and without judgement. Just BE REAL

B Believe her and believe in her

E Educate yourself; share your knowledge

R Reassure her that is was not her fault

E Empower with information and resources

A Ask what you can do and do your best

L Listen without judgment to what is said

Lynn Tolson

Lynn C. Tolson is the author of Beyond the Tears: A True Survivor’s Story. The book is her memoir about suicide attempts in the aftermath of sexual abuse. She is the founder of the Project for TEARS: Telling Everyone About Rape & Suicide. The mission is to 1) comfort victims by sharing her story 2) confront violence by breaking the silence 3) challenge society via information and action. Using her personal experience and professional knowledge, Tolson presents on these topics. She offers a message of hope and healing, as well as an understanding of silent issues that cause individual suffering and plague our society.
