Vice-President Joe Biden made headlines this month when he made the unabashed pronouncement that he took no issue with gay marriage and equal rights for the LGBT Community.  It was shortly followed by President Obama’s revelation that he too believed in marriage equality for everyone, leading to the now infamous Newsweek Magazine Cover naming him “The First Gay President”.  While many on the Right view this as a “flip-flop”, the President has long been a champion of equal rights, as was demonstration in his determination to reverse the long-standing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that now allows homosexuals to serve openly in the military without fear of retribution.  His Justice Department has also refused to prosecute under the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), because, as he has stated, “I don’t believe it’s Constitutional.”  We have watched as states have repealed the portions of their workplace discrimination policies to now exclude sexual orientation as a part of those policies.

Freedom to Work is a national organization committed to banning workplace harassment and career discrimination against lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender Americans through public education, policy analysis, and legal work.

Tico Almeida

Tico Almeida launched Freedom to Work in the fall of 2011. He has extensive experience advocating for workplace fairness as a civil rights litigator in private practice and a legislative attorney in the U.S. Congress. From 2007 to 2010, Almeida served as lead counsel on the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) for the Committee on Education and Labor of the U.S. House of Representatives. He drafted several portions of the bill, organized Committee hearings in support of ENDA, and built a thorough Congressional record necessary to apply ENDA to State government employers.  The National LGBT Bar Association recently named Tico Almeida to its list of the Top 40 LGBT Lawyers Under the Age of 40. He also serves as Co-Chairman of the Employment and Labor Law Section of the Hispanic National Bar Association. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his B.A. from Duke University.

The second half of the hour is an interview with Here Women Talk’s own Judy Stadt, host of “The Lunch and Judy Show”.  Judy is a world class, award-winning entertainer with experience in television, film, theatre and cabaret.  She recently launched a night-time webcast version of “The Lunch and Judy Show” that’s allowing her to add production and direction to her extensive resume.  Colin Lively, host of The Colin Lively Show fame and hairdresser to the stars has appeared in her first two webcasts and we’ll be asking Judy if he’ll be co-hosting regularly with her.  They make a delightful team, so if you haven’t had an opportunity to watch, we’ll let her tell you how to get to her program.  We want to talk to Judy about her lifetime career in entertainment, where she gets her inspiration and her energy and what’s in her future.  We suspect as Judy ages, (and we’re jealous that she’s doing so in the most graceful way), that she may be the next Betty White.
