Doris Day

Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh

Mike Flores and Colin’s Bitch Fest: Old Hollywood vs. New Tinseltown.

Greta Garbo, Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Doris Day, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, It’s A Wonderful Life – “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn,” “Here’s looking at you kid.”  Ah, Saturday afternoon matinees are where some of the best times of our lives were spent watching stars emerge before our very eyes. And now?

How do you feel about movies in recent years, or even recent decades? Has Hollywood lost its class and traded it out for flash and cash? I miss the old days, when stars were stars and movies had great story lines and no computer graphics.

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn

No one loves old movies more than my guest on this week’s Colin Lively Show. Mike Flores (Classic American Films Facebook page), as a kid growing up in Chicago, went to the movies. He loved the movies, passionately. Hollywood made movies, and they made stars. I, like Mike, haven’t been real high on movies for quite a number of years. But Mike is hopeful; he feels 2011 is the year that Hollywood was able to reach back into yesteryear and give us some of the best movies in many years. We are going to visit movies we all know and love, and Mike is going to contrast this year’s Oscar contenders with what we now call Classic Films. By the way, he is doing a movie of his own… And the winner is, The Colin Lively Show.

And by the way, what about cartoons? Can you believe the garbage they have now? Give me the old Bugs Bunny, Popeye and Steamboat Willie any day! Puleez!
